DEFINITION OF A RIGGER

A certified rigger is an individual trained and certified in managing and maneuvering loads. The certification level reflects their training, knowledge, skill, and proficiency in using rigging equipment safely and correctly. Certified riggers often have skills in various trades such as ironworking, electricity, carpentry, and more. Regardless of their primary occupation, their rigging expertise is a vital skill set in various industrial and construction settings, ensuring the safe and efficient handling of materials.

CERTIFIED RIGGER LEVEL I

The NCCCO Rigger Level I certification outlines specific job duties for those certified. A Rigger Level I is trained to handle basic, repetitive rigging tasks, understanding the weight and center of gravity of loads, and the appropriate rigging techniques. They are expected to be proficient in inspecting rigging equipment, selecting and attaching rigging correctly, and recognizing potential hazards. Additionally, they should be knowledgeable about various rigging equipment, basic hitch types, their capacities, and applications. This foundational level of certification ensures riggers have the necessary skills and knowledge for safe rigging practices.

CERTIFIED RIGGER LEVEL II

A Certified Rigger Level II builds on the foundational knowledge and skills of Level I, focusing on advanced rigging practices. This certification equips individuals to independently handle complex rigging tasks, including estimating load weights and centers of gravity, identifying lifting points, and selecting appropriate rigging for various load types. They are adept at conducting thorough pre-use inspections of rigging and lifting points, understanding intricate hitch configurations, and comprehending load dynamics. Additionally, a Level II Rigger possesses knowledge of hoisting equipment, winches, and other related machinery, ensuring comprehensive rigging expertise.

ADDING RIGGER LEVEL II TO EXISTING RIGGER LEVEL I CERTIFICATION

Rigger Level I certificate holders are encouraged to advance to Rigger Level II to face more demanding exams. They can upgrade to Level II anytime, with an option to take the Level II written exam in their final certification year instead of the Level I recertification exam. To complete Level II certification, they must pass the practical exam within a year of the written exam. It's recommended to take both the written and practical Level II exams concurrently, or to prioritize the practical exam.
