About The Crane School and what we do
Here is the short version of about The Crane School: we are a crane and heavy-equipment training provider based at 10929 E. US-92 in Seffner, Florida, just east of Tampa. For more than 21 years we have prepared students for crane operator, rigger, signalperson and telehandler certification exams.
We support the national certification program run by the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO). It matters to be clear about roles: NCCCO is the independent body that writes the exams and issues the certifications. Our job is the training that gets you ready to sit those exams and, more importantly, to run equipment safely once you hold the card.
Our students range from people who have never sat in a crane cab to operators with decades of seat time who need to recertify. Many arrive on their own; others are sent by employers who want a whole crew trained together. You can see the full lineup of courses on our crane training programs page.
Safety through Education
Everything we teach traces back to one belief: Safety through Education. A crane operator who understands load charts, ground conditions, rigging and signals makes better decisions under pressure, and that protects the people working under the hook. Good training also makes an organization run better, with fewer delays, less damaged equipment and crews that trust each other. That is why our classes spend as much time on why a rule exists as on what it says.
Three values shape how we work day to day:
- Teamwork. Instructors, office staff and students work toward the same goal. We draw on each person's skills and welcome people from every background, because a stronger team gets better results.
- Integrity. We tell students the truth about where they stand, treat everyone fairly and do what we said we would do. Trust is hard to earn back once it is lost, so we guard it.
- Commitment. We hold our work to a high standard and pay attention to what each student and client actually needs, not a one-size-fits-all script.
Our NCCCO certified crane instructors
Our instructors are operators first. Each has many years of hands-on crane work behind them, and that shows when they explain why a technique works, not just what the book says. Students regularly mention instructor Bud Wilson by name in their feedback.

The team also works daily with the regulations that govern lifting equipment, including OSHA, MSHA and ANSI/ASME standards. That background feeds directly into the classroom, into our crane inspection services and into the practical exams our accredited examiners administer.

Over the years, The Crane School has provided training or inspection services for a wide mix of utilities, contractors, manufacturers and public agencies. Organizations we have trained for include Duke Power, Mobil Oil, Martin Marietta, Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, Granite Construction, Skanska, Halliburton, SDG&E, Bombardier, Sempra Utilities, Boeing, Hawaiian Electric, Amron International, KIA, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and many municipalities and counties.

How our training is delivered
At our Seffner training center
Open-enrollment classes run at our Seffner facility, where students get seat time on our cranes as well as classroom instruction. Multi-week programs such as the 3-week and 5-week initial mobile crane courses meet full time, Monday through Thursday, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Experienced operators can join the monthly mobile crane certification prep program, which runs Friday through Monday. CCO written exams are offered every month at our headquarters.
At your company's site
Scheduled programs that include the required NCCCO exams can be delivered on-site almost anywhere in the country. Because our staff includes accredited practical examiners, CCO practical exams can also be scheduled nationwide. Employers can start that conversation on our group and on-site training page.
How we teach
You cannot learn to run a crane by reading alone. Our instructors break down technical terms into plain language, connect each topic to what you will see in the field, and then put you on the controls to practice. If written tests are hard for you, or English is your second language, they will explain the same idea several ways until it makes sense. The aim is to help you pass your exams and leave with a solid foundation for the work that follows.
