What "Crane Safety Certification" Means
People searching for crane safety certification in Pennsylvania are usually after one of several different things. There is no single card that covers everyone around a crane. Instead, each role has its own credential:
- Operators: NCCCO crane operator certification by crane type
- Riggers: qualification under OSHA, or NCCCO Rigger Level I or II certification
- Signalpersons: qualification under OSHA 1926.1428, or NCCCO Signalperson certification
- Supervisors and managers: training in crane safety management, which is training rather than a third-party certification
The Crane School prepares candidates for the NCCCO exams. NCCCO, not The Crane School, issues the certifications.
Pennsylvania's Extra Layer
Pennsylvania has state-level crane operator requirements in addition to OSHA — confirm current rules with the state agency and NCCCO's state licensing information before you work there. Philadelphia is also among the cities commonly cited for its own crane requirements.
For most operators, the starting point is still an accredited certification such as NCCCO. Check what the state, and the city if you work in Philadelphia, asks for on top of that before you take a job.
Training for Supervisors and Safety Managers
Supervisors set the conditions every lift happens under. Our Managing Crane Safety Class is built for management personnel and covers:
- OSHA and industry compliance requirements for crane work
- Who is responsible for what on a lift
- Lift planning and preventing common accidents
- Inspection programs and documentation
- Operator certification and qualification requirements
- Limiting liability through sound procedures
For a Pennsylvania contractor, this is often the missing piece. Operators may be certified, but no one has clear ownership of the crane program.
Riggers and Signalpersons on Pennsylvania Jobs
Many crane incidents trace back to rigging or communication, not operator error. Our Rigger Qualification / Certification Program covers load weights, center of gravity, hitches and hardware inspection. The Signalperson Qualification / Certification Program covers standard hand and voice signals and preparation for the NCCCO Signalperson exams.
Qualification classes run two days. Certification options add a practical exam day.
Operator Certification Paths
Experienced operators can earn or renew NCCCO TSS, TLL and LAT certifications through the monthly Mobile Crane Operator Certification Prep Program. Operators with little or no experience start with our 3-week or 5-week beginner program. Knuckle boom operators have a separate articulating crane program.
Conditions Pennsylvania Crews Plan Around
Pennsylvania mixes dense city work in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with highway, bridge and industrial projects across hilly terrain. Winter brings freeze-thaw cycles that weaken ground under outriggers, and river valleys can funnel wind. Safety training addresses ground bearing, mat use and weather limits so crews make the right call before a lift starts.
Building a Crane Program That Lasts
Certification is a starting point, not the finish line. A durable crane program pairs certified people with written procedures: who plans lifts, who inspects equipment, who can stop work and how incidents are reported. It also tracks renewal dates, since NCCCO certifications are valid for five years. Supervisors who complete crane safety management training are usually the ones who keep that program running between audits.
Bringing Training to Your Pennsylvania Team
Companies with several people to train can host classes at their own facility, and scheduled programs with NCCCO exams can be delivered anywhere in the country. Individuals can travel to our facility in Seffner, Florida. Fill out the form on this page or contact our office to talk through options. See our Pennsylvania crane training page for more on operator programs in the state.
