Learn to Direct Crane Movements Safely

A signal person is needed when the operator cannot see the load or its path, or when site conditions make one necessary. The signal person qualification class teaches the skills and techniques to direct crane movements safely and clearly. OSHA 1926.1428 sets the qualification requirements for signal persons on construction sites.

Course Content

  • Standard hand signals and when to use them
  • Voice signals and radio procedures
  • Where to stand and how to keep the operator informed
  • Stopping a lift and handling emergencies
  • Working with riggers and operators as a team

Qualification, Not Certification

This two-day program does not include a practical exam and does not lead to NCCCO certification. If you want the NCCCO Signalperson credential, choose Signal Person Only Certification (with Practical). Program details are on the Signalperson Qualification / Certification Program page.

Good Candidates for This Class

Laborers, riggers and foremen who signal lifts as part of their daily work are the typical students. So are workers new to crane sites whose employer needs them qualified before they direct a load. Qualified signal persons must know the signals, understand the crane's basic operations and limitations, and be able to show those skills. Employers with a group can ask about holding the class at their own facility.
