From Steel Country to Distribution Hub
The Lehigh Valley was once synonymous with steel, and the old Bethlehem Steel works still stand as a reminder of that history. Now the Allentown economy leans on something else entirely. Huge fulfillment buildings line I-78, and factories, hospitals and ongoing home and commercial building round out the picture.
Tilt-up warehouse walls, steel erection, rooftop equipment and material handling all call for cranes and telehandlers. Crane operator training in Allentown, PA gives crews on those jobs the NCCCO certifications contractors and owners expect.
Warehouses, Tilt-Up Panels and Telehandlers
Distribution center construction involves big, repetitive lifts: concrete tilt-up panels, long-span steel joists, roof deck bundles and rooftop units. Panels in particular are large, heavy and catch the wind, so the operator, riggers and signalperson need to work in step.
Operators with real cab time get ready for TSS, TLL and LAT in our Friday-to-Monday mobile crane prep. On a warehouse pad, the telehandler is often the busiest machine, and its operators can earn NCCCO THO through our telehandler training. Signalpersons who guide panels into place can take the signalperson program for NCCCO certification.
Lehigh Valley Weather
Eastern Pennsylvania has four distinct seasons. In winter, cold slows every setup and ice glazes slings and loads. Thaw and spring downpours turn new grading soft, and July and August swap that for muggy heat and afternoon thunderstorms.
Planning tips for big-site lifts
- Recheck ground bearing on fill and graded pads after rain or thaw.
- Calculate sail area for panels and wide loads, and respect wind limits.
- Knock off any snow or ice clinging to a load before it leaves the ground.
- Put tag lines on each panel and agree on who signals before the pick starts.

Bring Us to the Valley, or Head South
The Crane School has no Allentown office. When a company has a group to certify, our instructors and accredited examiners can travel up, teach in your trailer and test on your machines. Getting a whole crew carded ahead of a big build is usually simplest this way.
To plan the trip we need a few answers: what cranes and telehandlers you have, who needs the written test, the practical or both, and where a flat, roomy test course could go. On a busy warehouse site, a corner of the laydown yard often works well. Any job trailer or conference room can serve for the lecture portion.
Solo candidates can catch a flight to Tampa from Lehigh Valley International or Newark and join a public session in Seffner. Beginners also train there, in a four-day-a-week beginner course lasting either three or five weeks. Dates are posted on the Seffner schedule.
Keystone State Rules Go Beyond OSHA
Pennsylvania has state-level crane operator requirements in addition to OSHA. Confirm current rules with the state agency and NCCCO's state licensing information before you work there. A CCO card often plays a role in satisfying them, though the details depend on what you operate and the kind of work involved.
Statewide background is collected in two places: crane safety certification across Pennsylvania and our PA exam-prep page.
